Spirituality has a broad definition that encompasses a person’s inner beliefs, values and connection to something bigger than themselves. This can be a deity, the universe or anything else that brings meaning and purpose to a person’s life. Some people find comfort in the idea that a higher power is there to help them through difficult times and give hope when they are feeling down. Others may feel like a spiritual journey is a way to better understand their own existence and place in the world by finding meaning in daily routines and activities.
Some psychologists, including Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, have included spirituality as part of the human experience. Some have even gone so far as to call it the soul of humanity (Gilder, 1997).
Psychologist Roberto Assagioli developed a psychotherapy approach called psychosynthesis which views the spirit as an essential aspect of the human experience. This concept has also been embraced by many in the religious community.
Spiritual experiences are a great resource for people looking to cope with stress, depression and anxiety. Often, when these feelings arise, it is because of a lack of meaning in the person’s life. These moments of transcendence can bring a sense of calm and restore the hope that is important to a person’s well-being. However, it is important to recognize that developing a spirituality takes time and patience. It may also involve letting go of previously held beliefs in order to find something that fits.
